Climate change and uncertainty surrounding wine production in Southern Europe inspired us to start Thorbjørnrud Vingård. Our location near the Randsfjorden, with sunny exposure and nutrient-rich soil, is ideal for organic grape growing. In June 2022, we planted our first vines, including Solaris, Rondo, Pinot Noir. Our goal is to produce different varieties such as white wine, rosé wine, and various sparkling wines.
In May 2023, we expanded the vineyard with more Solaris and Pinot Noir vines, increasing the number to 6,000 vines. Our long-term goal is to produce 6,000 bottles of quality wine annually. In the fall of 2026, we aim to have our first large harvest.
The vineyard was established as a response to climate change, and represented an innovative response to the challenges of wine production in Norway, with a focus on sustainability and quality.
The vineyard at Randsfjorden has a favorable microclimate with good sunlight, which creates good growing conditions for the vines, and can produce wines with fresh acidity and fruitiness.
Our winters can be cold, but as many do not know, the grape varieties we grow cope well with the cold Norwegian climate, including winter temperatures. Snow can have a good insulating effect against the cold.
The Norwegian climate consists of cool nights and relatively warm days, especially next to the Randsfjorden. This means that we are able to preserve good acidity in the wine and fruitiness. In recent years, the season has become even longer due to global warming. In southern Europe, they struggle to preserve acidity in the wine due to climate change. In the long term, this may mean that it may be possible to succeed with classic grape varieties such as Pinot Noir in the long term.
Thorbjørnrud Vingård has a holistic approach from farm to table, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients and sustainable operations that respect nature. We cultivate according to organic principles. For example, we compost, green manure and avoid driving heavy machinery as much as possible. Each bottle is the result of patience, craftsmanship and courage despite all the challenges we face.
